RREF funding of new technology is helping the students and teachers to be “smarter” in math class. Mr. Don MacDonald, 7th grade math teacher at the Rocky River Middle School, was provided a grant to purchase Smart Response clickers for his classes.
The “clickers” are designed for math and science instruction and include a full keyboard to allow students to provide complete answers including equations. Since receiving the grant last spring, Mr. MacDonald has used the clickers in various ways in the classroom including homework review, assessment, and quick quizzes to gauge the students’ understanding of concepts. In all these instances, the students’ responses via the clickers have provided instant feedback. This feedback has allowed Mr. MacDonald to tailor his lessons to focus on the concepts that cause students the most confusion. As a result, the students are actively engaged in the learning process and lessons can be structured to address the most difficult concepts .
