After attending the Conference for Ohio Kindergarten Teachers, Janine Walsh returned to Goldwood continuing to reflect on how to reach each and every child she teaches.  Thanks to a grant from the Rocky River Education Foundation, she was able to make these wishes a reality by establishing literacy centers in her classroom.

Literacy centers are places or activities that engage students as they apply strategies they have learned about reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Each child is able to work independently or collaboratively, taking part in a specific experience based on his or her personal needs.

Centers enable students to use a hands-on approach, helping them stay excited about learning. While students are exploring the centers, Mrs. Walsh is able to meet with individuals or small groups, differentiating her instruction even more. The tasks continually evolve and rotate, so students are able to enjoy a variety of ways to apply the concepts being explored.

Daily literacy centers, partnered with Mrs. Walsh’s whole class and small group instruction, help her students find a love for learning.  Her goal is for all students to head to first grade with a strong literacy foundation, as well as the ability to work independently.  Thanks to the RREF, Mrs. Walsh is confident that her children will leave kindergarten either reading or ready to take off with reading!
